ORION - NASA's Deep Space Exploration Spacecraft Video

Detailed description of the Orion spacecraft, its capabilities and missions.

NASA’s Orion spacecraft is designed to take humans farther than ever before - beyond the moon to asteroids and even Mars. Orion will serve as the exploration vehicle that will carry the crew to space, provide emergency abort capability, sustain the crew during the space travel, and provide safe re-entry from deep space return velocities.

Europe's contribution to the Orion spacecraft is the European Service Module (ESM), which will provide propulsion, power, water, oxygen and nitrogen. The ESM will keep the spacecraft at the correct temperature and on course.

The ESM propulsion system includes a US Space Shuttle Orbital Maneuvering System (OMS) main engine, eight x 490 N auxiliary thrusters and 24 x 220 N thrusters for the Reaction Control System, produced at the Lampoldshausen Propulsion Centre.
